About The Interns

The IPA Washington interns are chosen from throughout the United States by a professional and lay committee. Congressmen, Senators and executives of Jewish political organizations have contacted us to let us know how pleased they are with the caliber and performance of OU interns. OU interns have served in many Congressional offices, including those of Senators Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Joseph Lieberman and Barbara Mikulski, and Congressmen Eric Cantor, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Jerrold Nadler and many others.

The Program

The IPA interns work in their office of placement on a full time basis over an 8 week period in June and July. Interns work in an array of tasks which may include research, constituent services, speech writing, and attending hearings of interest.

JLIC at University of Maryland recently arranged a fabulous night of learning with various women in the community, entitled "The Jewish Woman Throughout The Ages." Four very different women each spoke about a different aspect of women in Judaism. Sheila Jelen, a professor in Maryland's Jewish Studies Department, spoke about Gluckel of Hamelin, an early female business woman and diarist. Nira Berry spoke about owning her own business, Laughter Yoga, and led a session which was thouroughly enjoyed by all. Malka Adatto, the senior fellow at Yeshiva University's Graduate Program for Women in Advanced Talmudic Studies, spoke about Sara as the Mother of Identity. The evening was concluded with Viva Hammer, a representative of JOFA and a law partner at the New York City firm Crowell & Moring, who spoke about the legal issues involved in a anti-agunot pre-nuptial agreements.
There was a panel discussion during dinner, moderated by Davida Silberman, a senior at UMD, which brough up such issues as maternity leave, family time, and equal opppertunity in the workplace. Attendees said they were attracted by the variety of speakers and topics at the event, and left extremely impressed. University of Maryland

This past week, JLIC at University of Maryland partnered with AEPhi to raise over $1800 for tzedakah, which will go to Sharsheret, a national organization for young Jewish women with Breast Cancer. Manicure For The Cure was a day long event, in which students signed up to recieve manicures given by maniucurists at the American Beauty School in Weaton, MD. Essie cosmetics sponsored the nail polish for the event, so that a very large percentage of what students paid for the manicures was able to be donated to Sharsheret.
This event was the brainchild of JLIC educators at Princeton 2 years ago; was done at UPenn last year, and is being done at Brandeis next month, although every campus decides individually which organization they want to donate the proceeds to. Sharsheret was chosen by University of Maryland because of the fact that they help Jewish women with Breast Cancer, and Breast Cancer is a disease that Jewish women in particular have a high risk for. Also, Rachel Strauss, a student at Maryland, interned with Sharsharet last summer and is particularly connected to that organization. Rachel was very instrumental in helping to plan the event.
