Meet the Blacks

Rabbi Gideon Black began his academic career at the London School of Economics. From there, he went on to receive his law degree from University College London and an MA in Jewish Philosophy from YU's Bernard Revel Graduate School. As part of his rabbinical training at YU, Gideon both worked with the Jewish community in Charleston, SC and served as a rabbinic intern at Manhattan Jewish Experience and the Riverdale Jewish Center.

Rabbi Black’s keen interest in law and politics took him to Capitol Hill where he interned for Congressman Major Owens (D-NY), to Jerusalem where he worked in Office of the Mayor, Uri Lupoliansky, and to an internship at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Born in Glasgow and raised in London, Gideon was actively involved with Bnei Akiva across the UK as a teenager and spent his summers leading their camps and Israel trips. Gideon loves soccer, golf, yoga, the Queen, and walking the streets of Manhattan singing to himself “…I’m an Englishman in New York.”

Aliza Black obtained her undergraduate degree from Stern College, where she majored in Biology. After college, Aliza spent a year living with her husband in Jerusalem, where she joined the staff at Midreshet HaRova and volunteered in the education department of Yad Vashem and at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital’s maternity ward.

Upon returning to New York, Aliza taught Judaic Studies at Westchester Day School and began studying to be a Physician Assistant at Pace University.

Aliza is a New Yorker through and through. Born at NYU Hospital, working at NYU is a sort of homecoming for her. While at Stern (but when she wasn’t in lab), she could often be found running humanitarian trips to Belarus with YUSSR, interning at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, or teaching at the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue's Hebrew school. Aliza was also a camp counselor at HASC, a camp for people all of ages with special needs, and Camp Koby, a Israeli camp for children whose families have been victims of terrorism. Aliza loves high adrenaline sports such as skiing, biking, mountain climbing, and playing with her baby Judah!
