Rutgers University Community and Campus Info

Jewish Life at Rutgers:  The Rutgers University Hillel

While building plans for a new state of the art Hillel building are still in the works, the Jewish community enjoys the homey feeling of our Hillel house, located at 93 College Ave in the heart of the college Ave campus. To find out about the variety of programs that Hillel runs every week, check out www.rutgershillel.org.

Mesorah- The Orthodox Community at Rutgers Hillel

Mesorah, the Orthodox community at Rutgers University, is one of the most exciting and fastest growing Orthodox Jewish campus student groups in the nation. Besides their involvement in the general Hillel, Orthodox students host their own events such as breakfast extravaganzas after minyan, a weekly mishmar with guest speakers, bikkur cholim at local hospitals and more! See www.rutgersmesorah.org.

Jewish Learning at Rutgers:
The Poraths teach a variety of weekly classes for men and women as well as holding one on one chavrutot with many students. A few times a semester JLIC and kesharim sponsor lunch or dinner and learns with visiting educators. Rutgers Jewish Xperience offers classes for beginners, as well as off campus shabbatonim and on campus Shabbat meals. (see www.rutgersjx.com for more).

Shabbat at Rutgers:
Shabbat at Rutgers includes minyanim, meals at Hillel, Chabbad and students' apartments, tisches and onegs at Hillel and students' apartments, kiddush and shiur after morning services, and seudah shlishit.

Housing:
The university offers co-ed dorms on all of its campuses. Chabad runs an all womens' residence on College Ave. Most observant students opt to rent off campus apartments together in New Brunswick, near College Avenue where Hillel and Chabad are located. Observant students living in university dorms may request to be placed on College Ave for religious reasons.

Eruv:
The local eruv, whose checking committee includes many Rutgers students, includes the local neighborhood of Highland Park, the College Avenue campus and local hospitals.

Kosher Dining:
Chabad runs the josher meal plan on campus out of their building at 170 College Ave.
There are kosher sandwiches available on Douglas and Cook campuses.
Raritan Ave. in Highland park (5 min drive/20 min walk away) offers a variety of kosher restaurants and fast food stores.
Both Hillel and Chabad offer free Friday night dinners to Rutgers students. Chabad offers free Shabbat lunch as well and Hillel sometimes offers an RSVP Shabbat lunch at a subsidized fee.
